Module Evaluation

Before I started this module I hadn’t done any experimental film making so having that opportunity at the start of the module was really helpful because it made me think different about what I was filming and how I could improve my work in all modules. Especially the task that made us record the sounds in a different location to the footage. It made me think outside the box about my other work and how the sound could be made by one thing but sound like a completely different thing. For example the different kind of atmosphere sound could be found at different locations. For these tasks sound has definitely been a major part of them and this module has helped me improve my skills. It has also helped me develop my initial ideas and how to get them from just ideas to finished films. The experimental side helped me with putting 2 ideas together that wouldn’t usually go together but seemed to work within this capacity. The documentary helped me interact with the public and use my film mak...

Task 3 Post 5 - Film and Evaluation

Ben from Adam Bradley on Vimeo . I think that the drama task went well because we wanted to produce something that was funny but also got the seriousness of mental health across and I think we have done that. We only had a short number of characters and locations to work with but we have a simple idea in mind so this wasn’t a problem. I think if we were to do it again then would have chosen to do it when were was no snow around. This is because when we started shooting in the morning it had recently snowed so the snow was fresh and everywhere. But when we were still filming a few hours later the snow had started to melt and it didn’t look fresh so we had a little continuity error because in the film Ben had one walked for a few minutes but on screen it looked like he had been walking all day. Another thing we’d do differently if we to do this again would be dub the audio. We have a few lines of dialogue that take place in the centre of town which we tried to get but we co...

Task 3 Post 4

For our edit so far we have almost finish it. It only needs a few tweaks here and there and it will be a finished film. We are uncertain about a few things which the presentation and feedback will help us clear up. For example we change the negative voice over in Pro Tools quite a bit and we don’t know if the audience can understand everything that they say. If they say they can understand it then we don’t need to change it but if they can they can’t understand it then we will change it in such a way that it is distinguish able from the positive voice but is also understandable. Thanks to the feedback everybody understood what was said so we don’t have to change it. The feedback we got was helpful because we were uncertain about a few things that we had done with our edit and whether it would help to story flow forward. But everything that was said was positive. We weren’t sure whether we got the point across that Josh’s character was just a fragment of Ben’s mind that the end fi...

Task 3 Post 3

We planned to shoot on March 19th and 20th. There was snow everywhere so we planned to shoot on consecutive days encase the snow melted and we'd have major continuity issues. So much so that we would have had to film everything again. This is why we shot everything on those two days. We also shot the underpass scene the same day. We shot it when it was light, then went back when it was dark so we had that distinct different between what was in Ben's head and what was real.

Task 3 Post 2

For our short drama we would like it to be a comedy but is also addresses a real problem about mental health. Ben is the main character and he is constantly effected by his anxiety within his everyday life. Our story follows an average day for Ben as he tried to leave his apartment and simply go food shopping. He tried to stick to empty side roads and allies but is eventually forced onto the main high street because that is where the main food shop is. Whilst he is on the high street he accidently bumps into a passer-by and he gets into an altercation. This person haunts Ben and he takes the form of all Ben negative thoughts until Ben confronts him and realises he needs professional help. We wanted the final altercation between the two to be funny and silly but with a serious undertone about mental health and the serious ways it effects people going about their normal lives. Ben tried to go about a daily routine of going to the shops but ends up re-evaluating his condition and decidi...

Task 3 post 1

The short film I will be talking about is called Digits by Alexander Engel. Is it 7 minutes 42 seconds long and was made in 2015. This film is about a man who recently got a girl’s number but 2 of the digits are missing and he franticly tries to find the girl again by trying every possible combination. The themes within the film drive the films narrative. For example the theme of desperation is prominent throughout the whole film as the man desperately tries every combination to try and find the girl’s number. Another prominent theme is loneliness. The man is trying to overcome his loneliness and connect with this girl so they can be together. I liked this film and the way it was simple but still effective. For example there is only one location which is the man’s front room and only a handful of actors which mostly only have one line. But because the film has a simple narrative its works well just focusing on the man. The structure and style of this film is simple but effective ju...
