Skateistan: To live and Skate Kabul

This film is about a group of people who have taken up skating to life their spirits in a town that is quite deprived by war and famine.
Feminism is very prominent within in short film. This is because the older, more traditional males within the community don’t like the idea of a female skating. War is another theme within this film. Fighting has taken over their town so they use skating to get away from it all.
I think the film was successful in dealing with the subject matter. I think this because it focused on the skating and how that’s helping the children but it also informed the viewer about why they skate and how the war has effected them.
I liked the way the director used the cutaways to demonstrate what in being said by whoever was being interviewed at the time. For example when a young girl who is 12 is talking about how skating helps her forget about her family being poor and living in poverty. Skating takes her mind of things and lets her escape into her own little world with her friends at the skate park.
