For this piece
we went to Peace Gardens because we knew that the fountain would make a good
subject to film because it has a distinctive sound. We also shot a Coke can
because that also has a distinctive sound that people could recognise even when
it is not in shot. This piece of work has taught me that you can hear something
without it being in shot and it will still make sense and the audience will
still know what’s going on. For example we used the sound of a Coke can without
it being in shot, but the audience still knew what that going on and what they
were hearing. We also did this with the fountain. We shot close up with the
Coke can but with sound of the fountain. Even though we couldn’t see the
fountain in shot we knew it was nearby because we could hear it.
Our work is similar to the short film Photograph of Jesus.
In the film a narrator is talking about his job and some of the ridiculous requests
he gets on a day to day basis. The strangest request someone has asked for was
a photograph of Jesus. Our experiment film is similar to this because even
though we can’t see where the sound is coming from we still understand. Even
though their sound is a narrators voice and our sound is a Coke can and a
fountain it is similar on the way the sound is used.
Another short film that is similar to ours is Daybreak
Express. This short film shows us various shots throughout a city. It shows us
buildings being built and being used. It also shows people going to work and
using public transport. This is similar to our work because ours also has shots
of people going about their day to day business.
The film Salaryman isn’t similar to ours. In this film a Japanese
worker is stuck in his office job and doesn’t have time for anything else in
his life. Our film isn’t similar to this because this follows a narrative and
our film it just a sequence of shots without any narrative or story.
