Task 3
For this task we walked around Sheffield city and we filmed
everything. We Started a peace gardens and ended up back at the university. We
filmed the entire time and sped the footage up creating a time lapse. We record
sound in the city centre because it is a busy place with a lot going on and we
wanted to capture all of it. We recorded a few specific sounds that we thought
we could work well within our video. We recorded a lot of atmosphere sound
which we put over the whole footage then recorded specific sounds which we put
over the top. For example we recorded traffic, trams, and the fountains at
peace garden and the stalls at the Christmas market. We layered the sounds on
top of the atmosphere sound so you can hear both. Even though the footage is
sped up and the sound is normal. You can still notice which parts of the sound
goes with which piece of footage.
Our film is about a character who is trying to remember the
previous day but his memory is incomplete. That’s why the film has jump cuts and
is all sped up. He can’t quite remember all that happened. Some parts of his
day is more memorable than others, that’s why the woman in red pops up out of
nowhere because she had a distinctive coat on which was bright red. This is
also why the sound is just atmosphere with a bit of specific sounds, because we
don’t usually remember sound that well, just what we think it would sound like.
We took inspiration from the short film Daybreak Express.
This short film is by DA Pennebaker and was made in 1953. This short film shows
us various shots throughout a busy city showing people on a day to day routine.
This is similar to our piece of work because
even thought our character is remembering their day, it also shows other people
going about their normal day.
Another film that we took inspiration from is Jazz Dance.
This short film was shot by Richard Leacock and was made in 1954. This short
film gives us an insight into a particular Jazz club in the 50s. This is similar
to our film because our film gives the viewer an insight into the day in the
life of our character but also into the day to day activities of the people in
the back ground.
We also took inspiration from the short film Photographs of
Jesus by Laurie Hill. The narrator is talking about the weirdest requests he’s
had from day to day work. This is similar to our work because we are also
showing people in their normal day to day lives.
